Monolaurin is a glyceride ester derivative of lauric acid, a fatty acid found in coconut oil and in palm kernel oil. It's also naturally present in breast milk, contributing to the immune-boosting properties of the latter. Monolaurin is available as a dietary supplement and is known for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.
Monolaurin and Herpes
Monolaurin has been studied for its potential effects on viruses, including the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). In vitro laboratory experiments have shown that monolaurin can inactivate the herpes virus. It's believed to work by interacting with the lipid membrane of the virus, disrupting its structure, and preventing the virus from binding to host cells. This inhibits the virus's ability to replicate and cause an infection.
Monolaurin Supplements for Herpes
Monolaurin supplements are available in capsule or pellet form.
The dosage can vary, but most supplements recommend 600-1200 mg per day, taken in divided doses.
Some individuals may experience die-off symptoms (Herxheimer reaction) when first taking monolaurin, which can include fatigue, headache, and flu-like symptoms.
These symptoms are temporary and should subside as the body adjusts to the supplement.
Monolaurin and Cold Sores
Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are caused by the HSV-1. Given monolaurin's potential antiviral effects against HSV, it has been suggested as a possible treatment for cold sores. Some anecdotal reports suggest that applying a monolaurin-based cream or taking monolaurin supplements can help reduce the duration and severity of cold sore outbreaks.
